The Google X Labs: The research laboratory of Google (since 2015: Alphabet). The research lab was set up in 2010 by the (German) AI/robotics expert Sebastian Thrun (who has since founded the learning platform / MOOC Udacity, as of today he's managing director of the company Kitty Hawk, which is developing an aircraft mobile).

By the way, the "X" stood for the "unknown" that was to be explored in the laboratory's research work.

A milestone in the history of image recognition by AI algorithm is a breakthrough achievement of Google X Labs. In 2012, a network of computers was fed with about 10 million images; after three days, the "Google Brain" succeeded in identifying not only people but also cats on these images.
