In software development, the so-called smoke test is the very first test run, which indicates whether an application is running reasonably smoothly or whether further development is required before the full test program is started. The term was usually used by craftspeopel, where smoke is conducted through pipe systems (sanitary area) or woodwind instruments to detect possible leaks.
